Rationale


This course will help students understand the significance and the role of Corporate Finance within the organisation. It will incorporate practical exercises enabling students to assess forthcoming professional challenges and situations utilising financial tools and principles, fostering seamless collaboration across corporate domains.  
The course aims to introduce tools and techniques used in basic corporate finance through a detailed examination of risk and return, capital structure, capital budgeting, valuation and ratio analysis.

Learning Outcomes                 


At the end of the course, students will be expected to:
(i)    Explain the implications of the overarching strategic objectives of the organisation for the finance function
(ii)   Assess the involvement of the organisation's financial managers in achieving these overarching strategic objectives.
(iii)  Evaluate the different sources of corporate finance (e.g., equity, debt, retained earnings), explaining the relative advantages and disadvantages of each source.
(iv)  Determine how risk and the cost of capital impact investment appraisal and explain how such factors affect the value of a capital project.
(v)   Assess the external and internal influences on a corporation’s capital structure, pay-out policy and policy concerning risk management (via insurance, derivatives, and other instruments).
(vi)  Explain how the corporation’s capital structure, pay-out policy and risk policy impact investment decisions.
