Rationale


General Psychology I introduce the students to the content of psychology and its controversies, explaining the applicability of psychology to one’s own specific major field. Since psychology is a dominant factor in all aspects of life, once acquainted, the students will examine all major theoretical perspectives and translate the empirical methods and data regarding all topics that are involved. 

Learning Outcomes


At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i)    Explain the relevant historical events leading to the development of psychology. 
(ii)   Explain the major theoretical perspectives.
(iii)  Inspect critically the different perspectives in psychology. 
(iv)  Elaborate on the empirical methods in psychology. 
(v)   Differentiate the major advantages and disadvantages of the different research methods. 
(vi)  Formulate an overview of the organisation of the nervous system. 
(vii) Illustrate the processes involved in sensation and perception. 
(viii) Compare and contrast the different levels of consciousness.
(ix)  Assess the effects of major types of psychoactive drugs. 
(x)   Utilize classical and operant conditioning theories, and complex learning phenomena. 
(xi)  Distinguish between the main human memory types and processes. 
(xii) Formulate an overview of language acquisition.
