The main objectives of the module are to:

1. Provide a critical understanding of key concepts, rules and functions of EU and International data protection law.

2. Consider the challenges and opportunities for substantive data protection law in a globalized and interconnected world.

3. Present a context within which you can see how the academic law ‘translates’ into the provision of legal advice.

Learning Outcomes


After completion of the module students will be expected to be able to:
1. Understand the nature and functions of key areas of data protection law and the broader context in which it operates.
2. Understand how data protection law seeks to balance the objectives of facilitating the movement and sharing of data, with the protection of privacy and data protection rights, and the challenges which inhere in this approach.
3. Understand how academic law ‘translates’ into the provision of legal advice in the field of data protection law.
