RATIONALE

The module is designed to provide students with the core principles and key uses of epidemiology so that they may develop an understanding of its application to public health practice. It introduces students to both fundamental and advanced concepts in epidemiology, including methods for describing and analyzing epidemiological data, critically appraising study designs and interpreting public health issues.
 

AIMS

1. To enable students to gain an introduction to epidemiology and its application to public health practice.
2. To provide students with a detailed knowledge of epidemiological terms, measures and types of study.
3. To enable students to understand published epidemiological evidence so that they are able to apply this understanding to their professional practice.
4. To facilitate students to be able to translate and disseminate evidence from epidemiological studies.
 

LEARNING OUTCOMES
 

On successful completion of the module, a student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the key uses of epidemiology in public health.
2. Critically appraise epidemiological research designs, demonstrating an understanding of the strengths and limitations of the different methods, interpretations, and applications.
3. Recognize and critically interpret the findings of epidemiological studies.
4. Demonstrate the ability to translate and disseminate published epidemiological evidence into forms appropriate for both lay and professional audiences.
