Rationale
This course is a response to the concept of modernism, a kind of literature that emerged around the 19th century. The course contextualises the learner into a series of experiential styles in relation to modernity, social and political contexts.
The aim of the course is to equip students with the theories and reading techniques for understanding modernist texts from different genres of literature which may include literary, philosophical and political.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Identify characteristics of modernism in given texts.
(ii) Interpret the wider historical narratives within which modernist texts were produced and within which they have been commonly read.
(iii) Illustrate familiarity with the historical contexts and background that influences the emergence of modernism and modernist literature.
(iv) Examine the concepts of sexuality and gender in modernist literature.
(v) Analyse the concept of intertextuality, conscious and the unconscious in modernist literature.
