RATIONALE
This module explores research approaches, designs and methodologies, thus
enabling the student to develop their investigative and analytical skills. The application
of inquiry, analysis and evaluative comment are essential for critically assessing
information and using this to develop future strategies in a range of environments such
as commerce, education, health and social care. Competence in gathering, examining
and critiquing different types of data (numerical and qualitative) will enhance the
student’s ability to understand the significance and relevance of research within their
industry and aid their ability to construct effective resolutions to issues in relation to
their environment.
AIMS
To enable students to develop a comprehensive understanding of approaches
and techniques necessary for success in both quantitative and qualitative
research
To equip students with the skills required to collect, collate, analyse, present
and interpret data in a variety of forms
To provide participants with the intellectual tools and practical knowledge
required a) to secure ethical approval for their research, and b) to manage their
research endeavour to a useful conclusion.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:
Evaluate the rigour and validity of published research and assess its relevance
to a research topic
Demonstrate a range of qualitative and quantitative research skills
Critically evaluate a range of research methods/techniques, both qualitative
