Module Description

The Module provide knowledge on computer security technology and principles, including cryptographic tools, user authentication, access control, and formal models for multilevel computer security. Security of networks is also discussed in this module.

Module Aim

The aim of this module is to provide students with knowledge of basic concepts of computer security including network security and cryptography.

Module Learning Outcomes

After completing the module students should be able to:

  1. Analyse the principles and practices of cryptographic techniques
  2. Explain a variety of generic security threats and vulnerabilities.
  3. Analyze particular security problems for a given application.
  4. Describe protocols for network security to protect against the threats in a network
  5. Identity various types of malicious software and use counter measure defense/detection tools.
  6. Analyse protection policies and mechanisms to secure a personal desktop
  7. Identify vulnerabilities in simple programs and rewrite them to make them safe
