MODULE AIMS

This module will help you to develop an appreciation and understanding of the importance of assessment and development for work organisations. It will examine the challenges around measuring human capabilities and characteristics, and look at the links between these factors and organisational success. It will evaluate what psychology has contributed to our understanding of how people learn, and analyse the impact that human resource development has on organisational success. Overall, this module will give you the tools and techniques to succeed in employee assessment and development roles, as well as nurturing a critical and analytical perspective about assessment and development in the workplace.

 

Main topics of study:

  1. The context, aims and effectiveness of selection and assessment within organisations
  2. The principles of psychometrics
  3. Interviews, ability tests, personality measures and assessment centres
  4. Fairness and justice in selection systems and their critical application to organisational approaches to hiring people
  5. The context, aims and effectiveness of learning and development within organisations
  6. The contribution of psychological research to the areas of learning and memory
  7. Managing training groups, working with conflict and building rapport
  8. Delivering training and development interventions and evaluating their effectiveness

MODULE LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

Knowledge

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the main assessment and selection methods
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of psychological principles in enhancing the design, delivery and evaluation of learning and development interventions
  3. Demonstrate an appreciation of how different approaches to assessment, selection and development can marginalise certain groups

       4. Demonstrate a critical and analytical appreciation of the benefits and disadvantages of various assessment, selection and development techniques

       5. Demonstrate creativity and innovative thinking in addressing an assessment or development difficulty for a client
