RATIONALE

The module Mathematics and Statistics for Computer Science will provide the foundational skills and knowledge to understand, communicate and apply mathematical and statistical thinking to model and solve real-world problems in the context of computer science. An interdisciplinary knowledge of mathematics and statistics intersects with a range core subject areas in computer science including: algorithms and complexity analysis, data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence, image processing, graph theory, cryptography, cybersecurity and network analysis. This knowledge is essential and lays the groundwork for understanding how computing and the language of computing interacts with all aspects of modern-day society.

Upon successful completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Understand the relevance of mathematical and statistical concepts to computer science
  2. Outline the core mathematical and statistical concepts that are most widely using in computer science
  3. Solve basic mathematical and statistical problems 
  4. Apply an understanding of mathematical and statistical concepts to solve simple and complex problems
