Module Description
The school curriculum represents the knowledge, skills, character, ethos, goals and aspirations of the education a society wants for its people. This module introduces students to what a curriculum is, and how it is developed, implemented and evaluated. The module will enable student teachers to understand how the school curriculum is interpreted and translated into ethical teaching and learning. It will also provide student teachers with an understanding and appreciation of their role in the curriculum process, and how they translate curriculum content to teaching content to improve teaching and learning outcomes for learners.
Module Aim
This module aims to enable student teachers to define the concept of curriculum, and to both understand and apply the key principles of curriculum development and the development and assessment of instructional materials, for effective and ethical teaching, and learning and assessment.
Module Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the module students should be able to:
1. Define curriculum, its orientations and determinants.
2. Analyse the curriculum development process.
3. Explain the role of teachers in the curriculum process.
4. Implement a curriculum in gender and inclusive education contexts.
5. Generate instructional materials using educational technologies.
6. Apply curriculum theories to classroom practice.
7. Apply knowledge of decolonization in teaching, learning and assessment.
