Description:

Integrated Science I is a module that introduces student teachers to the core content of primary school science, combining physics, chemistry, biology and agriculture. The module demonstrates the importance of science in the everyday life of individuals and its relation to the development of a nation. The module uses a scientific inquiry approach to promote critical thinking and enable decision making to be informed by scientific evidence. The elements of scientific inquiry deployed in the module are aimed at promoting healthy habits of questioning and using reason, enabling individuals and communities to create new knowledge, and to expand their opinions in light of new evidence. Part I of Integrated Science focuses on introductory elements primarily associated with physics and chemistry.

Module Aim
The aim of this module is to introduce student teachers to core concepts, content, and teaching methods of science and scientific inquiry. The module aims to equip student teachers teach integrated science, with basic elements of physics, chemistry, biology and agriculture, to primary school learners, and assess their progress in the understanding of science and scientific thinking.

Module Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the module, student teachers should be able to:
1.    Discuss the concept of science and scientific inquiry.
2.    Trace some major milestones in the history of scientific inquiry.
3.    Explain how physics, chemistry and biology interface and interact with each other.
4.    Classify matter and its forms.
5.    Describe atoms, elements and molecules
6.    Analyse the periodic table.
7.    Differentiate between physical and chemical change, and chemical cycles.
8.    Explain motion, magnetism and electricity.
9.    Describe the solar system and the universe.
