Rationale
Sociology is a generic course for students undertaking any education programme. The course is intended to provide the students with knowledge and greater understanding of the significant role that society has in the learning process. The course will examine the ways in which individuals’ experiences affect their educational achievement and outcomes.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
i. Analyse the concept of Sociology of Education and explain its different branches of sociology.
ii. Discuss the different early works of sociological thinkers and founding fathers of Sociology and Sociology of Education.
iii. Explain the different perspectives in the field of sociology (Historical, empirical, and analytical).
iv. Analyse key debates and arguments in the area of sociology in education and how these relate to empirical research.
v. Analyse the significance of social identities and differences for internal school processes and pupils’ experiences of schooling.
vi. Recognise educational inequalities and explain their relationship to wider social and economic structures and processes.
vii. Evaluate the education institution and its current state in Zambia.
viii. Illustrate the different types of Education, its tasks and the role the MOE plays in the Zambian education.
ix. Discuss the concept of socialisation, its elements, stages and its role in education.
x. Explain the difference between education and socialisation, and analyse the difference between adult and child socialisation.
xi. Distinguish between a Leader and an Administrator/Manager.
xii. Explain the roles and reason for Management/Administration of schools.
