Description:

Rationale
Political leadership seems to be synonymous with leadership for most students and yet it is an important concept that tends to affect a number of educational institutions. For others, leadership is only associated with the Head of the institution omitting other important departmental leaders up to the classroom teacher who is crucial in managing and leading a class to ensure effective learning takes place. Debates on the leadership and management positions in institutions continue hence, this course examines leadership from the aspect of the classroom teacher who is expected to effectively manage the classroom. The aim of this course is to improve professional capability in educational management. The course presents a diversity of views and methods as to what establishes real management and leadership in an educational institution and how this contributes to effective learning. This course provides the historical context of management, including bureaucracy, scientific management, the Human Relations Movement and the Behavioural Science Movement. These will include the various functions and theories of management and leadership, as well as at the theories of educational management.
