Rationale
English may not be the first language for most of the students. However, it is the medium of communication for most nations now. The aim of the course is to provide potential teachers with the skills necessary to communicate effectively both in written and oral way in the English language. This course will provide a solid foundation in written communication through examining its fundamental grammatical and syntactical elements and positioning the students into resolving challenging assignments. The course covers areas such as writing methods, descriptive, narrative and persuasive writing styles and significant tips for writing.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
i. Recognise and write basic sentence structures and avoid common writing errors.
ii. Identify components of a basic sentence.
iii. Use pronouns and their antecedents correctly.
iv. Apply the different types of punctuations.
v. Use strategies to avoid commonly confused words.
vi. Use the dictionary correctly.
vii. Write well-structured paragraphs.
viii. Identify the different types of descriptive essays: person, place, object, and event.
ix. Identify the characteristics of a notice, a report and organise a logical and persuasive order.
x. Explain the relevance of reading.
