Description:

Rationale
This course aims to prepare future teachers with the skills necessary to introduce science to students in a simple and practical manner. Integrated Science is an integration of three subjects that is Chemistry, Physics and Biology. A foundation is provided which instils critical thinking and laboratory skills to prepare the student for further studies later. This is crucial as it establishes a knowledge basis for important topics including the human body, energy, environment, pollution, substance abuse, animal biology etc. which in later stages become integral parts of any future study or profession.  By the end of the programme a graduate student will be qualified to teach all areas of biology, chemistry and physics.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:

i.    Explore the main external parts of the human body and human framework (skeleton).
ii.   Discuss the systems in the human body, such as the digestive system, the blood circulatory system, the respiration system, the integumentary system, the nervous system and the reproductive system.
iii.  Explain why balanced diet, personal hygiene and regular exercise are very important to maintain good health.
iv.  Discuss the classifications of disease.
v.   Explain drug abuse and addiction.
vi.  Give an overview of the different spheres of the environment (the lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere), and how these spheres support life on earth.
vii. Discuss the different types of pollution, including air, noise, water, soil and light pollution.
viii.Explain the structure and characteristics of the animal kingdom and describe plant biology.
