Rationale
Expressive Arts is a combination of a number of Arts. This course will only concentrate on the following works of expressive Arts; Art and Design, Performing Drama and music. Expressive Arts is a practical and creative course that should be fostered in young children to provoke their creativity, imagination, possibility and curiosity by developing their abilities to explore and develop their own ideas. The result of which will be critical thinking minds that will take designing, artistic work and performing arts seriously. The industry for Expressive Arts tends to be under-utilised in some developing countries while on the contrary such a profession highly sought after in developed countries. In developing countries, the industry is laden with lack of ingenuity and uniqueness, hence a serious consideration has been noted in the creation of this course. Students through this course will develop knowledge, attitudes, creative and imaginative skills, aesthetic sensitivity and values so that they in turn nurture these qualities through their teaching to their students. Potential teachers will explore between others the different visual art forms and their cultural connections, they will conduct a brief study of art history, and in-depth studies of the elements like line, shape, form, texture, colour, rhythm, harmony, balance, size, space, unity, media. Methods used in creative thought and processes will also be considered. Course highlights include artistic production, the identification of political, social, cultural, and aesthetic issues examined in artistic works and the analysis of the role and effect of visual arts in societies, history and world cultures.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
i. Analyse the Expressive Arts subject, and the different ways these concepts affect societies and cultures.
ii. Explore the meaning behind particular works of Expressive Arts within the context of various styles and cultures.
iii. Explain processes of expressive arts and the terms that are used to describe and analyse any expressive art work.
iv. Explore the principles of different Arts.
v. Explain how observation, collaboration, fast learning, visualisation of ideas can be achieved in Expressive Arts.
vi. Create sketch books to use to review and revisit ideas.
vii. Create artworks using two-dimensional media and three-dimensional media.
viii. Discuss how artists express and interpret the world through Expressive Arts.
