Rationale
Also known as home economics, the course has a multiple disciplinary content. The content varies and keeps changing with the contemporary developments and changing consumer needs. It’s an important subject that provides students with entrepreneurial, innovative and creative skills in various areas that enable them to be self-reliant within. The potential teacher will gain skills in communication, research, management, problem solving, decision making, and critical thinking; which can be applied in daily life and/or ventured into business. Such significance cannot be underestimated bearing in mind the youth unemployment rate in the country. Nutrition, puberty and the functions of the human skin as well as the changes that happen in a child’s body during puberty and the menstrual cycle will also be examined. The course ends with issues in Family and Consumer Science.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
i. List and discuss different household cleaning equipment, how to use and discuss usage and storage.
ii. Explain how to deal with household pests such as mosquitos, flies, bedbugs, cockroaches etc.
iii. Explore the different sources of food, and the different cooking equipment and utensils used in the kitchen.
iv. Use the various utensils and kitchen equipment correctly.
v. Differentiate between informal and formal seating when laying a table.
vi. Identify the different sources of water and water purification and the importance of good sanitation.
vii. Identify the basic personal hygienic practices in daily life.
viii. Explore the dangerous objects commonly found in the home.
ix. Create works/crafts using various techniques of knitting, crocheting and beading.
