Description:

Rationale
This course is designed to introduce students to the teaching and learning of mathematics in the pre-primary school level. Throughout the course there is a focus on building students’ own mathematical subject knowledge alongside their pedagogical and curricular understanding. The course takes as its starting point the importance of talking about and enjoying mathematics in order to be able to teach it effectively. It will explore the development of number and calculation in detail, alongside shape and space, and provide an overview of the rest of the mathematics curriculum. Key elements of the mathematics teacher’s repertoire, such as questioning, using errors and misconceptions to inform teaching, and assessment for learning, will be examined, together with the vital role of using and applying mathematics.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
i.    Analyse the importance of the effective mathematics teaching for the pre-primary age-range.
ii.   Identify key numeric competences that include the understanding of concepts, principles, and applications.
iii.  Construct an appropriate progression in learning within an identified area of the mathematics curriculum.
iv.  Apply creative approaches to the four strands, namely, use of number, measurement, and space and shapes.
v.   Appraise and critically evaluate their school-based experiences of mathematics teaching and its impact on children’s learning.
vi.  Apply logical thought and engagement with investigative processes that lead to solutions.
vii. Identify targets for professional development.
