Rationale 


This course focuses on major theories and contexts involving the politics and policies of the European Union (EU).  It studies European integration, the competencies and the operation of EU institutions, policy making processes as well as the main EU policies. Students are encouraged to consider current debates in EU politics and the role of the EU within a broader global context.

Learning Outcomes


At the end of the course students will be expected to:


(i)    Describe the historical evolution of the EU.
(ii)   Interpret the theories behind the evolution of European integration.
(iii)  Identify roles and powers of institutions in the European Union.
(iv)  Describe the EU system of governance.
(v)   Describe the policy-making process in the EU system.
(vi)  Identify the member states and political parties of the European Union.
(vii) Assess current debates about the EU’s role in the world and their impact on future developments.
(viii) Describe key EU policies.
(ix)  Explain the role of states and their governments on shaping European legislation and vice versa.
(x)   Analyse contemporary debates and developments in EU politics.
