Rationale
The course explores the practices of digital image making and analysis, by introducing the digital image as a communication tool, a visual language channel and a source open to interpretation. The students will examine different techniques and theories on how to create, communicate and perceive compelling digital images, based on the context and the desired impact these images aim to create. They will be encouraged to experiment and research various digital images, formulate and apply their own visual language, developing visual literacy and critical thinking skills. Additionally, several theoretical issues and ideas, along with the works of contemporary experts of the field will be identified and discussed.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Define the digital image as a communication tool and visual language.
(ii) Describe the different types of digital images.
(iii) Identify theoretical concepts and apply them in design and analysis processes.
(iv) Describe the image making process, from research and ideation phase to design phase.
(v) Identify various visual languages used in different creative disciplines.
(vi) Formulate their visual language, depending on the meaning they want to transmit and the context in which they situate this meaning.
(vii) Evaluate issues that arise in digital image making.
(viii) Explain the mutable nature of the visual meaning, using a range of theoretical ideas.
(ix) Employ various software tools for image design and enhancement.
