Rationale


In today’s fast-growing business world, Logistics hold a critical role in the activities of global companies which heavily rely upon and invest in supply chain management and logistics processes to gain a competitive advantage. Thus, this course aims to empower students in acquiring in-depth knowledge and abilities to apply key elements of logistics processes, such as logistics planning and strategy, customer service, transport arrangements, inventory, warehousing, and handling. The students will address a range of issues about transport modes selection, vehicle routing, inventory policy and storage in order to design and plan logistics, making informed decisions about timing, location, layout of warehouses, transportation routes, modes, and providers. The course familiarises students with the element of interconnectedness between business units and organisations within the supply chain which is necessary in order to understand how to streamline the flow of such business processes and improve a company’s performance.

Learning Outcomes


At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i)    Describe the significance of logistics and their impact on business and commerce.
(ii)   Identify the critical elements of the processes of logistics and supply-chain management and their application to ensure smooth flow of operations.
(iii)  Explain the ways to integrate logistics in order to optimise the supply chain process and therefore, the overall performance of the company.
(iv)  Explain the significance of minimising nonvalue-added elements and employing accurate forecasting.
(v)   Implement information business logistics systems and software to solve relevant decision-making issues and achieve improved accuracy.
(vi)  Examine challenges and new logistical approaches.
(vii) Explain how to design and plan logistics by addressing critical issues that determine the product’s journey.
(viii) Identify strengths and weaknesses of various transportation modes and perform cost analysis using statistical skills to eliminate excessive costs.
(ix)  Describe how to develop logistics strategies in order to find the best paths to route vehicles for the delivery and collection of goods.
