Rationale


The course examines the values of diversity, equality and inclusion within the workplace environment and their significance in any kind of management in particular in Human Resources. It draws attention to current issues of equality, bullying, sexual harassment, racism and well-being in the workspace. The students will be introduced to recent employment developments through a theoretical analysis of the establishment of business ethics related to equal opportunities. In addition, the course brings a broad analytical approach, focusing on labour market and institutional dynamics of inequality, such as gender pay gap and inequalities facing particular social groups, such as ethnic minorities and migrants. Throughout the course, the students will understand the experience of inequality and unfair treatment at work, its impact on the affected individual, the psychological theory underpinning this experience and explore ways and strategies to transform the workplace into an inclusive, diverse and fair space of production.

Learning Outcomes


At the end of the course students will be expected to:

(i)    Define the key concepts, theories, policy and regulatory frameworks that underpin diversity, equality and inclusion.
(ii)   Examine diversity, equality and inclusion issues in different organisations, sectors and societies.
(iii)  Evaluate the causes of inequalities and provide solutions to drive diversity and inclusion.
(iv)  Evaluate theoretical arguments and real-life case studies.
(v)   Explain why managing diversity has become such a significant subject within the field of employment relations and Human Resource Management.
(vi)  Identify barriers and enablers for equality, diversity and inclusion and wellbeing in the workspace.
(vii) Examine how the government and organisational bodies have the power to shape and transform aspects of gender and equality through labour market regulation.
(viii) Identify discriminatory practices that promote employment inequality and unfairness.
(ix)  Describe the critical role that HR has in fostering these values and provide examples of its practice.
(x)   Apply managerial skills gained with respect to the implementation of fair and inclusive good practices within the organisations.
