Rationale
Accident causation theory aims to help health and safety professionals understand why, how and under what circumstances accidents happen in the workplace. Students will study the categories of accident causes in order to be able to investigate these and provide prevention measures. Furthermore, students will be introduced to accident investigation techniques as well as to how to manage legal consequences through case studies and incident examples.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Explain the importance of accident causation theories in health and safety management systems implementation.
(ii) Identify the most applicable theory for the incidents that may occur withing the workplace.
(iii) Describe the advantages and disadvantages of various accident investigation methods.
(iv) Conduct thorough accident investigations in order to identify their cause as well as apply the appropriate preventive measures.
(v) Identify common sources for different incidents.
(vi) Promote safety culture through training on accident causation and behavioural change within the organisation.
