Rationale
In this course, students will be introduced to how human and psychological factors affect health and safety systems. Also, with correct application, students will better understand how to improve staff performance and working welfare in order to benefit the overall operation. They will study how humans interact in a work environment and understand how to prepare, assess and apply the most suitable interventions. Students will further examine the design of work procedures and how these are created and shaped, through the analysis of human psychological factors and health and safety requirements.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Identify how physiological stress affects the welfare of workers and the overall operation.
(ii) Design a safe and sustainable work environment through the effective application of human factors theories and methods.
(iii) Develop work procedure designs that will ensure both worker’s welfare and improve overall organisational performance.
(iv) Identify the limitations of human task performance in the workplace and modify tasks to improve health and safety.
(v) Explain the impact of ergonomics on human factors, work organisation and organisational culture.
(vi) Analyse the structure of work systems.
(vii) Classify tasks and factors relevant to work assessment and design.
