Module code:
UU-MED-2260-ZM
Credits:
14.00
Description:

Rationale

This course provides students with the fundamental principles of disease mechanism and processes as well as the histopathological nomenclature, which are applied to understand the aetiology, pathogenesis, and pathophysiology of systemic diseases.

The aim of this course is to teach the basis upon which pathological conditions develop and progress in various organ systems.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i)     Define terminologies used to describe disease mechanisms and processes.
(ii)    Describe changes in tissue inflammation, healing, and repair processes.
(iii)   Explain the aetiology and pathogenesis of oedema, thrombosis, shock, immune disorders, and neoplasia.
(iv)   Identify tissue changes in varying pathologies on histology and gross organ appearance.
(v)    Analyse the aetiology, pathogenesis, and pathophysiology of systemic diseases.
(vi)   Perform laboratory diagnosis of pathological conditions.
(vii)  Conduct laboratory investigations on patients with haematological disorders and recommend further complementary investigations.
